The Root Chakra represents the way in which you are embodied, or not so embodied, in this world of time and space and form. It is the 1st Stage of the Journey of Yoga related to Personal Development. The other Stages of Yoga are related to the Transitional and the Transpersonal or Universal.

Most of us have issues around the balance of this subtle energy centre. We are not rooted or grounded in our sense of physicality.  This is because our experiences during early childhood and the cultural obsession with the overthinking mind.

What is Root Chakra Healing – It is a focus on returning to and learning how to be present in the body. It is the practice of being rooted and grounded in physical form. It is the foundation for all chakra healing.

In Yoga – Journey for Life our focus is on embodied spirituality. Unlike some spiritual teachings we do not teach transcendence beyond the physical form but through the physical form. So let me outline this blog post for you.xx

It has always struck this writer that in the Lord’s prayer there is the request: –

Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven – Matthew 6:10

Many spiritual teachings insist that you can only get to Heaven beyond some form of the body where in some magical way the body is resurrected.

This is a recipe for what is termed Spiritual By-passing.

It invites you to practice dis-embodiment. You can declare that the world is Maya or illusion and all that you are doing is parroting a truth you have no direct experience off.

As the modern mystic Eckhart Tolle, writing in The Power of Now – A Guide to Enlightenment states: –

Enlightenment is not away from the body but through the body – Eckhart Tolle.

What is Root Chakra Healing

The healing of the Root Chakra begins when you make a commitment to embodiment. You learn to move the energy from the voice in the head into inner body awareness.   There are different ways of doing this.

I have found no better way than to practice Yoga Nidra.

For me this is the premier practice for returning to live as a body in full Presence. It leads to alignment with the other major chakras and brings about personal integration.

This practice of Yoga Nidra  lays a firm foundation for the Yoga Journey of Life.

You are here on this planet of duality to learn to embody the Presence of the Divine. You are not created to try an escape embodiment into some transcendental realm of Bliss.

In yoga nidra, we restore our body, senses, and mind to their natural function and awaken a seventh sense that allows us to feel wholeness, tranquillity, and well-being – Richard Miller (Yoga teacher clinical psychologist and founder of iRest Yoga nidra).

The more embodied you become the more you relax into a direct knowing of the truth of All One. It is not something that you simply declare as part of a teaching you have no personal direct experience off.

Recognized Dis-embodied Spirituality

You begin to recognize that you and the Dance of Life are never apart.

However, you are here to be a dance of Life in the form of the body you are given. You are not created to live like the character Mr. Duffy from the novel The Dubliners written by James Joyce.

In this novel is it is said of Mr Duffy: –

Mr. Duffy lived some distance from his body – The Dubliners – James Joyce.

I have seen far too many dis-embodied spiritual seekers and teachers preaching the doctrine of Maya and illusion.

This includes the doctrine of detachment which the Western mind loves because it implies one need not engage with the difficult and challenging work of integrating emotional reactivity and different levels of personal trauma.

The result, as one of my teachers Sangharakshita, found out when he started teaching Westerner’s Buddhist meditation that students learned to detach from emotions that they were already detached from. This he had not found to be the case while teaching meditation in India for over two decades.

The result was that many of the meditators experienced depression and became what I term ‘floaty.’ They were not all there. They were not embodied and where not practicing how to sense the inner body.

Practicing Spiritual By-passing

I see different people on YouTube and elsewhere inviting others to open their Third Eye (Sixth Chakra). In my personal experience the opening of the Third Eye is a Grace experience and not one that you can push for.

It is a way of Seeing that will radically change your world view. You and the Seeing become one.

Maybe you are searching among branches for what only appears in the roots. – Rumi

Far better to focus the mind’s eye on the breath in the body and bring the energy into developing inner body awareness rather than explore a state of consciousness that needs clear boundaries and personal integrity to invite the experience of Boundless Seeing.

Releasing Body Armour

Root chakra healing is essentially learning to release what the German psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich referred to as body armour.

Without awareness of bodily feeling and attitude, a person becomes split into a disembodied spirit and a disenchanted body. – Alexander Lowen

This is the challenging work of removing emotional blocks held in the musculature of the body. It is where we developed holding patterns of breathing and posture in order to protect ourselves from emotions that as young children, we thought would overwhelm us.

Between the voice in our heads, that is the everyday normal insanity of the overthinking personal mind, and our holding back the free flow of emotional energy most of us have around 20% of our energy available to heal what needs healing.

This is a percentage that I have taken from a lecture given by the renowned medical intuitive and author Caroline Myss entitled, “Why people don’t Heal and How they Can.” This is not, I think, a scientifically proven statistic but it points toward an energetic truth for many people.

Can you see why the phenomenon of spiritual bypassing and detachment from detachment is so attractive? You then have no need to feel in order to heal. You can simply pass Go and move into the transcendental realms of the higher chakras.

Sorry but it just doesn’t work like that.

The Stage of Personal Development

Your real work in Yoga Journey for Life is the integration of the personality. This is the integration of the lower three chakras: –

  1. Root Chakra.
  2. Sacral Chakra.
  3. Solar Plexus Charka.

From the practice of personal integration you begin to feel what it is like to move more deeply into the heart chakra (4th chakra). The heart chakra opens you to the dimension of the transcendental. You become a channel for embodying what in Christian terms is called Heaven on Earth.

You begin to feel the unity of the human and Divine that is the reason you are embodied in time and space on this planet Earth.

You begin to embody Love’s Purpose. You are not simply mouthing belief in concepts such as Maya and illusion. You are becoming all too real.

Chakras are organizational centres for the reception, assimilation, and transmission of life-force energy. They are the stepping stones between heaven and earth. – Anodea Judith

With a balanced root chakra you are more detached but not from feelings. You are more detached from emotional over reactivity and the overthinking personal mind that is, as you will recognise, the real Maya because it is only words and concepts masquerading as real life.

It is not groundedness and embodied spirituality.

If you want an image of someone with a root chakra that is balanced and flowing look no further than at young children playing for no reason.

They have not yet learned to armour the body through ideas of right and wrong. They have not as yet, metaphorically speaking, eaten of the Tree of Good and Evil and been thrown out of the Garden.

The Healing Has Begun

I can’t really recommend the practice of Yoga Nidra highly enough. It is one of the best spiritual and grounding practices I have ever discovered.

Discover this for yourself. Learn to go to the basecamp of embodied spirituality and Presence and ascend the mountain of your glorious potential. This is while all the time keeping your feet on the ground and being present in the body.

This is root chakra healing. This is where in the words of the Irish singer songwriter Van Morrison declares “The Healing has Begun.” When I was a younger man and felt ungrounded I used to put on the headphones turn up the volume and dance to the song. May you commit to creating healthy boundaries and an ability to ground yourself in the NOW.

This is root chakra healing. This is embodied spirituality where you can declare, “The Secret of Secrets is Inside Me Again.” Let it be so for you. Let it be so for all. Let the Healing begin.
