What is intentional living? It is to live in alignment with your personal Y-E-S. This is learning to allow the flow of your energy system flowing from an integrated intelligence of body, mind, emotion and spirit. It is a daily practice of exploring what it means to live with Purpose, Passion, Prosperity and Presence requiring commitment, discipline and patience.

I am in love with the practice of intentional living. My latest intention is to explore writing a course on this subject that I would title Intentional Living – Learning HOW TO Companion YOUR Greatness. This would begin as a 21-day email course of instruction. It would to some degree follow the format of the workshop Companioning YOUR Greatness that I give here in Ireland.

Intentional Alignment

Alignment with what?

Alignment is where you make the conscious choice to live in tune with the intention of the Universe as it created you to uniquely express through you. This is to authentically live with:-

  • Purpose,
  • Passion,
  • True Prosperity arising from the flow of
  • Presence.

All very well and good but HOW TO do this? This is the reason why I wish to create an introductory course to share with you the HOW TO of living intentionally.

To begin the journey of living a life of intention you are introduced to what I call your personal Y-E-S. This is an acronym for the phrase, “Your Energy System.”

Living Your Y-E-S

Living intentionally requires a commitment to learning how to tune into your energy. This requires a major change of focus in your life.

You commit to practicing HOW TO listen to the Still Small Voice Within rather than the voice in your head that the singer songwriter Mike Scott of the Waterboys refers to as, “The Madman in the Cave of Your Skull.” (World Party)

Writing in the modern spiritual classic The Power of NOW – A Guide to Enlightenment the modern mystic Eckhart Tolle calls this voice in the head, “The normal insanity.”

This is a movement from living from overthinking and emotional reactivity to feeling sensational and moving from the experience of FLOW.

The Voice

There is a voice inside of you
That whispers all day long,
“I feel this is right for me,
I know that this is wrong.”
No teacher, preacher, parent, friend
Or wise man can decide
What’s right for you–just listen to
The voice that speaks inside.”

― Shel Silverstein

Just to remind you not to take this invitation to listening to the Still Small Voice Within literally.

The way to understand this “voice that speaks inside” is shared by the mystic Eckhart Tolle in The Stillness that Speaks. (Recommended Reading)

Do not try to understand this invitation of the Still Small Voice with the intellect.

Integrated Intelligence

I think therefore I am – Rene Descartes. (1596-1650)

It is said that the above quote ushered in the age of enlightenment. However, it also ushered in a focus on living life back to front. The more enlightened statement is, “I AM and therefore I sometimes choose to think.”

Intentional living is focused on integrating various intelligences beyond conceptual thinking that are:-

  • Somatic Intelligence. (Body)
  • Emotional Intelligence.
  • Mental Intelligence.
  • Spiritual Intelligence.

Most everyone in the Western world is living a life of mental constructs driven by ideas. This, as any wisdom tradition will tell you, is at best living a half-life.

When I was being educated in Northern Ireland in the 1960-70’s there was little or no training in the other intelligences that relate to the body, the emotional body and the spiritual body.

In modern day education there is no focus on wisdom available from alignment with spirit (not to be confused with religious education).

The mystery of the world is revealed only to the person who can look upon the material world with his physical eyes and simultaneously has the spiritual vision necessary to see the unseen spiritual world. One who knows both Matter and Spirit is thus the true knower, and is a spiritually intelligent being. ― Awdhesh Singh, Practising Spiritual Intelligence: For Innovation, Leadership and Happiness

Daily Practice

daily practice of intentional living

Most of the living we have learned to do is unintentional. It is also living done from the focus of, “Doing Life.”

You are not going to live an intentional life unless you engage with daily practices that promote alignment with your Y-E-S. This is like a commitment to going to the gym each and every day.

The reason why there has to be daily practice is because this is the only way in which you will be able to move from unintentional living.

Daily practice is the only way to establish the necessary neural networks in your brain that then become patterns of intentional living.

In the course Intentional Living – Learning HOW TO Companion Your Greatness I plan to introduce you to practices that you can do without making major changes to your lifestyle.

Such practices will also give you more time because they will change your energy system and its relationship to time. This is the real secret of effective time management and creativity.

We learn by practice. Whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing living, the principles are the same. -Martha Graham –  Modern dancer and choreographer

intentional living is Being on Purpose

Photo by Danica Tanjutco on Unsplash

To live an intentional life means that, at least intellectually to begin with, that you understand:-

  1. The Primary Purpose of Life
  2. The Secondary Purpose of Life related to you as a person.

Most people who declare that they KNOW their life’s purpose are very often focused on their secondary life purpose.

This secondary life purpose is driven from what the mystic Thomas Merton called, “The False Self.”

The primary purpose of your life is to live in alignment with the Purpose of Love. The degree to which you learn to allow this alignment to be your life focus is the degree to which your life energy will flow as it is intended to do so.

You were born an original. Don t die a copy. – John Mason

The practices shared in Living Intentionally – Learning HOW to Companion Your Greatness focus on how to feel into this Purpose of Love as intended to be expressed through you and the signs that indicate this is happening.

intentional living is passionate living

To begin with the invitation to learning HOW TO live an intentional life might not be very exciting. However, there has to be a spark in order that, in the words of  the poet W. B. Yeats, we might light a fire in your heart.

Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire – W. B. Yeats

This is not to say that there will not be resistance to the idea of intentional living. I think it normal that such a resistance occurs. This is often a sign of a prelude to change.

To begin with intentional living requires discipline commitment and patience. This is the case with learning any new life skill. More so when you are intent on changing your life focus.

Resistance can become the power that propels you toward the next stage of your life’s journey. So don’t be too hard on yourself if you feel that the invitation to intentional living is not for you at this time.

Very often your degree of interest is related to the Stage of Life that you are living and the degree to which, up to this point in life, you are tired of suffering and disappointment.

living intentionally leads to prosperous living

Photo by Andre Furtado from Pexels

Live long and prosper – Spock from Star Trek

Intentional living invites the flow of prosperity. When I use the word ‘prosperity’ I am writing about the experience of real prosperity.

This is where you pour forth into the world all that you are created to gift it. In return you are gifted all that you need. This is a very different focus from the way you are taught to understand Life.

True prosperity is not about getting more and more stuff that in many ways  can constrict your freedom to be who you are created to be. True prosperity feels so right and so easy. It is where you become a channel for gift giving.

You pour away from a sense of fulfilment rather than a focus on lack and wanting. However, in order of this to happen you do need to have your basic needs, such as food, clothing and shelter met.

There is no secret to how to attain prosperity. The Universe supports and rewards us for taking risks on things that matter to the Universe. When we remember this, the mysteries about prosperity disappear, and prosperity stands explained. Prosperity will then manifest itself easily provided the Universe agrees that we are doing the right things in our lives to deserve this prosperity. — from Life’s Secret Handbook (Reminders for Adventurous Souls Who Want to Make a Big Difference in This World) Ernie Zelinski

intentional living requires commitment

Living an intentional life means that you are committed to exploring and revealing the magnificence of the light of your own Being. (Hafiz)

Then your joy and fulfilment is to shine that light into the world. This isn’t something that you will force yourself to do. It is what you love to do and have done through you.

In the beginning this is not your experience.

Joy and flow are not something you feel on a regular basis. Maybe you never feel it. This is why to begin with you need to have at least a lukewarm interest in this journey. You need to be committed to the possibility even if you do not experience the actuality.

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. ― William Hutchison Murray

The kind of commitment you need is a daily commitment. If you are someone who is keen on getting instant results living an intentional life  really may not be for you. You might be more interested in living a life of goal setting where you are the controlling agent rather than have the silent Power of Love be your guiding light.

The way in which I share living an intentional life is by way of a Feminine approach rather than a masculine approach. This is more by way of allowing rather than by way of doing. It is more by way of watching the river flow rather than pushing the river.

The key focus in my approach to intentional living is the feeling of trust. You are asked to commit to trust in the wisdom voice within you. I do not tell you what to do. More to the point, I keep you focused, by way of practice on trusting your Y-E-S – your inner GPS.

discipline is a necessary part of living an intentional life

Photo by Pixabay from from Pexels.com

The word disciple comes from the word “discipline.” This has become a word that has morphed into something that you do against your will. Originally it is quite the opposite.

A disciple is the rarest flowering of human consciousness, because beyond the disciple there is only one peak more – the master. And one who has been totally a disciple one day becomes a master. Disciplehood is a process of becoming a master. But one should not start with the idea of becoming a master; otherwise one is going to miss, because then it is again an ego trip. One should come simply to evaporate – Osho

To begin with discipline is necessary because the primary discipline of learning to live intentionally is to take command of the voice in your head. This is your overthinking personal mind that is ever on like a badly tuned radio. The radio station it is tuned into is the station “Never Enough.”

Without the ability to tune out this overthinking mind there is simply repetition of old patterns of behaviours and allied with this emotional reactivity.

With a daily discipline that focuses you on intentional living you become a disciple. The real disciple is in love with the Master. The Master is the way in which Life flows through the form of the body to express as de-light from the Light of Love.

I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures. Lao Tzu

In the beginning discipline involves a sense of resistance. Nothing within this world of time and space grows without resistance.

It is how consciousness on this planet evolves. The seed pushes against the earth. The baby pushes against the body of the mother. Without resistance the new cannot be birthed

This is why you need patience.

patience is a core aspect of intentional living

Photo by Nikola Jovanovic on Unsplash

In learning to live an intentional life you require infinite patience. This is because you are not going to the supermarket to buy stuff that you can clearly measure. You pay your money and you acquire the goods.

The results of intentional living are more subtle. They are manifested as a result of your alignment with what is referred to as the Field of Intention. This is the Universal Field of Creation. This Field of Intention created you to express through you.

When you’re connected to the power of intention, everywhere you go, and everyone you meet, is affected by you and the energy you radiate. As you become the power of intention, you’ll see your dreams being fulfilled almost magically, and you’ll see yourself creating huge ripples in the energy fields of others by your presence and nothing more.― Wayne W. Dyer, The Power of Intention : Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way

You have never really been taught about your relationship with this Field which is who you are and why you are. You think that you are separate from this Field of Infinite Potential but you are not. Your understanding of this Field of Intention is a revelation and a revolution in your life.

The Bright Field – R S Thomas

I have seen the sun break through
to illuminate a small field
for a while, and gone my way
and forgotten it. But that was the
pearl of great price, the one field that had
treasure in it. I realise now
that I must give all that I have
to possess it. Life is not hurrying

on to a receding future, nor hankering after
an imagined past. It is the turning
aside like Moses to the miracle
of the lit bush, to a brightness
that seemed as transitory as your youth
once, but is the eternity that awaits you.

Religion is supposed to take you into direct KNOWING and FEELING of this connection but most everyone who ever teaches you religion in my personal experience, has had no such direct KNOWING.

The result is that they can only promise you an experience that they have no experience off.

Thus you have the situation where religion has been reduced to a practice of cerebral belief rather than the guidance toward transformational experience beyond belief.

Patience is not sitting and waiting, it is foreseeing. It is looking at the thorn and seeing the rose, looking at the night and seeing the day. Lovers are patient and know that the moon needs time to become full. ― Rumi

Patience is required because with intentional living you will need to trust the journey into the unknown but not the unknowable. This has never been a part of the Western education system with its emphasis on right brain thinking and information.

This rational thinking ability  is a wonderful gift but it has been over emphasised to the point whereby most of us are quite literally half brains.

Intentional living is where there is balance but the emphasis is on left brain living. When the left brain informs the right brain there is insight and wisdom. Then action is moved from Love in action rather than oppositional left brain thinking.

Intentional living is not about acquiring more information, although that is necessary to begin with. It is more about learning how to invite the direct experience of transformation. In order to take that kind of journey you need much patience. You learn to wait without waiting. You learn to invite the Timeless into the experience of time.

Blossoming into the REAL You

So that gives you a brief overview of the way in which I teach the invitation to intentional living. It may not be the way others teach it but it is the way I love to live it.

Intention is the core of all conscious life. Conscious intention colors and moves everything. -Master Hsing Yun

My plan over the coming weeks is to outline the 21-day introduction to Living an Intentional Life – Learning HOW TO Companion Your Greatness. I think that initially I will add these 21 days to this website which will be available to those who join the Yoga Journey for Life Community.

The reason why I invite you to be part of a community is so that over time you become part of a real social network committed to the revelation of your own magnificence. This is not an invitation to a sense of personal ego mania. It is anything but that.

Intentional living is living from the foundational intent of Creation. When you consciously align yourself with that intent then you cannot really go wrong. With this intention you begin to move toward the majesty of the Field of Intention whereas the mystic poet Jelladun Rumi says:-

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase “each other”
doesn’t make any sense. – Rumi

This is the Field of intention. It is beyond right or wrong. It is paradoxical. It holds the tension of opposites. You are more relaxed because you live within this field. You are less resistant and the flow of intention designed to flow through you is made manifest.

This happens more and more because you recognise how to allow it. You KNOW that your fulfilment is pouring through you from this Field of Intention that you no longer feel apart from and you are never apart from.

This is a very different way of living in the world.

Most people are living their lives back to front and then to compound the error are living a half life from the overthinking mind. You live your life back to front with you make living life a focus on doing rather than Being.

This gets you into the do – do.

Although most people live their lives from a place of doing, in other words living through the mind, the quality of our life resides in our being, or living through the spirit. Taking it one step further, living through the mind is fear-based while living through the spirit is love-based – Michelle Zarrin

This is not your fault because you have not been taught the majesty of living from the dimension of Being and allowing what is to be to manifest through you.

This is the way of Easy but to the overthinking mind it appears not at all easy. This is resistance. This is the unwillingness to enter the unknown in order to know what is beyond belief.

So I hope this invitation to living an intentional life in the way in which I teach it will invite you to make a commitment to Companion Your Greatness.

The world needs people to step up to the major challenges that exist on this planet at this extra-ordinary time of change. However, in order to do so you need to live with a focus that is different to the existing paradigm. As the modern mystic and father of modern science Albert Einstein said:-

You cannot solve a problem with the same level of consciousness that created it.  – Albert Einstein.

Let yourself become an intentional agent for the change you wish to see.

This change is the movement from the Will to Personal Power to the Will to Love. If you are interested in stepping into this Field of Intention then join me in community and learn HOW TO live the intentional life.
