Spiritual Awakening Poem

the spiritual journey begins

The Spiritual Journey toward the Light

The poem The Song of Wandering Aengus is a poem of awakening in three stages:-

  • Before Awakening—The Process
  • The Awakening—The Revelation
  • After Awakening—The Integration

There will be those who experience the stage of revelation without having journeyed the before awakening stage. This may give rise to a spiritual emergency.

For more on the various stages of spiritual awakening, you may find it of value to read this post entitled The 5 Stages of Spiritual Awakening.

The hero of this poem is a wanderer. It draws him to go seeking. What It reveals to him is beyond his wildest imagination. He becomes a finder. Then as a finder, his focus is on integrating what it has graced him to KNOW. This changes his life beyond belief.

Before Spiritual Awakening

The part of the poem that relates to the before awakening experience is as follows:-

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

The hazel wood represents not a place but a state of awareness. We access this state of awareness through different forms of meditation and mystical prayer. You become inspired (fire in the head). This is your Call to Adventure. You begin the Hero’s Journey into the revelation of who and why you are.

It draws you to go fishing. What you will catch isn’t what you could ever imagine. It is of the other world. This is a gift of revelation from beyond the world of time and space. It looks ordinary but in reality, is extra-ordinary (little silver trout).

The Awakening

The hero Wandering Aengus is given a revelation of awakening. He is engaged in the ordinary task of preparing to light the fire and cook and eat the little silver fish. This, unknown to Aengus, is a fish of the world beyond time.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

When you are called by your name from the world beyond time, this is not your personal name. The word ‘name’ refers to your soul vibration. It is your good vibration beyond the everyday world of duality that separates everything into ‘good’ versus ‘bad.’

You cannot stay in this state of enlightenment symbolised by the brightening air. The grace experience of spiritual awakening leaves you. However, you will want it back.

Spiritual Integration

Through Hollow Lands and Hilly Lands (W. B. Yeats)

The spiritual awakening experience is always given by way of Grace. Now you KNOW who you are and why you are. It makes you aware of the purpose of Life. Your focus becomes HOW TO live in alignment with Love’s purpose.

This will take you wandering through the hollow lands and hilly lands of the separate sense of the personal self. You will have a deep heart’s core longing to re-experience the glimmering girl state of Being.

This is the state of union. It is the state of Yoga. It is the fulfilment of Life’s purpose made manifest through you.

You will wander through time (though I am old with wandering) searching for the experience of the Timeless. This is to KNOW once again the experience beyond time. It is to KNOW yourself as and emanation of eternity.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

The silver apples of the moon and the golden apples of the sun relate to the union of the masculine and feminine. This is the union of time with eternity.

Reflections on Spiritual Awakening

The language of mystical and mythological poetry and storytelling is the language of spiritual awakening. It is beyond intellectual information. This is the language that awakens the heart’s longing to come home to KNOWING the Divine.

Mystical poetry and mythological storytelling are two of the ways in which I feel in communion with Divine intention. Other ways include modern day song lyrics and prayers and blessing from different traditions.

The primary way in which the spiritual awakening process unfolds for me is through a deepening connection to silence. This is the silence that speaks through me and manifests what is designed to be expressed and created through me. This is a flow state. I allow the Divine to think through me. This is the best way to live life.

In this way you will find the glimmering girl that symbolically represents your soul. You live your true name which you are created to live and express as. You FEEL in alignment with the purpose of Creation which allows you to feel full of purpose, passion and real prosperity.
