Each and every one of us spend most of our time, metaphorically speaking, “Chasing cars around our heads.”. It is the primary cause of most personal and collective suffering on this planet. In this article I explore a favourite  yoga song entitled Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol in the hope that you might better understand the invitational power of these lyrics to invite you to experience yourself as a “Garden bursting into Life.”

In order to share the meaning of chasing cars lyrics by Snow Patrol let me begin to outline the way in which I will share such meaning.

So if you have not listened to the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol then listen now to remind yourself of the invitation.

Meaning of Chasing Cars Lyrics by Snow Patrol

Chasing Cars Lyrics

We’ll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don’t need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don’t quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They’re not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that’s bursting into life

Let’s waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that’s bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they’re all I can see

I don’t know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

So when I pulled up the lyrics of this song of yoga (invitation to union) I quickly jotted down phrases that jumped out at me in no particular order. I made this listing into the menu above so that you can jump around those lines that appeal to you.

Please note that this is my personal interpretation of this wonderful song. This is what it means to me. Whatever, it means for you will depend to a large extent on the Stage of Life that you are presently living.

If you are a seventeen-year-old (Early 1st Stage of Life) you are likely to take the lyrics as in some way related to a romantic relationship. This, I think, is the way in which most teenagers will view this song. However, for me (Early?Mid 2nd Stage of Life) this is very definitely a song of spiritual invitation.

So let me share with you what a Yoga song or song of yoga is.

What is a Yoga Song?

Yoga songs are songs that one listens to with one clear intention. This is the intention of inviting the experience of union (yoga). Living a Yoga Lifestyle means you are committed, especially in the 2nd half of life to the union of:-

  • The Personal with the Universal.
  • Time with Eternity.
  • Earth with Heaven.
  • Power with Force.

One KEY way I love to FEEL into this experience of union is by listening to what I refer to as heart songs. These are songs, that when I listen to them bring me alive with longing to become all I am created to be. These Yoga Songs are heart friends along the journey of spiritual awakening. Such an invitation to spiritual awakening is invited in the song Chasing Cars.

So lets explore the deeper meaning of the lyrics of the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol.

Lets Waste Time

time for creativity

The idea of wasting time is a fabulous idea if it is rightly understood. It can be a door opening to the vastness of creative potential within.

I highly recommend it. For this writer, it is an essential Yoga Life Skill. To use another lyric from Mike Scott of the Waterboys it is the ability to sit In Silent Fellowship with yourself.

The idea of wasting time has, for many people, negative connotations. The mantra of the Western culture is, “Time is money.” However, for those who are really in the KNOW the more meaningful and powerful mantra is, “The Timeless is True Prosperity.”

Wisdom teachers of all traditions KNOW that the most valuable experience you might ever be graced is of NO TIME – this is the experience of eternity. In eternity you can’t waste time because eternity is outside of time.

Learn HOW TO waste time in a positive and fulfilling way.

In this way you learn to do a paradoxical thing which is the art of non-doing (wasting time). In learning the art of Non-doing you will find that time expands. Things get done through FLOW. You become a channel of Grace that allows Creation to do through you.

There is so much less effort and struggle. There is so much more fun and creativity.

Learning the art of non-doing, which I will refer to as wasting time, is learning to be present to the present moment. In being present to the NOW you enter your internal garden that has the potential of bursting into life would that you be willing to learn how to allow this.

One of the greatest wasters of time was the modern-day father of science Albert Einstein.

So the best way to begin to learn how to waste time – the art of non-doing – that will, paradoxically speaking, allow you to do more and BE more is to begin with the conscious practice of lying down.

Will You Lie With Me.

The phrase, “Will you lie with me” might be an invitation to another – to a lover or a potential lover.

From a spiritual perspective, and to someone committed to the revelations of the 2nd Half of Life, this is an invitation to the experience that the Sufi’s (mystical tradition of Islam) refer to as The Beloved.

Rumi says it this way:-

A lover asked his beloved,“Do you love yourself more than you love me?”

Beloved replied, “I have died to myself and I live for you.
I’ve disappeared from myself and my attributes,
I am present only for you.

I’ve forgotten all my learnings,
but from knowing you I’ve become a scholar.
I’ve lost all my strength, but from your power I am able.

I love myself…I love you.
I love you…I love myself.”

So the individual who is living a Yoga Lifestyle, lies down with the intention of forgetting the world of time and space. The intention is to meet with the Beloved.

You will have your own name for this invitation. In the movie Star Wars this invitation to, “Will you lie with me,” would be directed to what is called “The Force.” This connection is not an idea but a direct embodied experience. It is inner KNOWING experienced from inner body awareness.

Your intention is to move beyond time and space (forget the world) where you begin to KNOW, “How I feel.” You especially begin to KNOW that those three words (I love you) are forever enough when they are experienced from beyond the limitation of time.

This direct KNOWING is one of the real gifts from the 2nd Half of Life.

This song lyrics from Chasing Cars invites me to remember to lie down and practice Yoga Nidra. In this practice there is one sure thing that will happen. This is, that I will go, “Chasing Cars around my head.”

Chasing Cars Around Our Heads

chasing cars around our heads

Photo by Kelvin Valerio from Pexels

The lyrical phrase, “Chasing Cars around our heads,” is a metaphor for the way that thoughts in are head drive our life. The thoughts in your overthinking personal mind drive your energy rather than have you drive them.

This can drive you insane if you allow these thoughts to drive your energy system – what I call your Y-E-S.

The key Yoga Life Skill invited in this phrase is to NOT go chasing cars (thoughts) but to simply witness them and not give them energy. Without the proper practice of Silent Witnessing (Yoga Song – In Silent Fellowship – The Waterboys) this “Chasing thoughts around our heads”  is often experienced as some form of reactivity or negativity.

The practice of NOT chasing cars around your head is called Silent Witnessing. This is practiced by way of some form of meditation or inner body awareness practice such as Yoga Nidra or other body sensing technique.

In this way the chase eases and you begin to recognize that you need the Grace of Present Moment awareness to allow your inner garden of potential to burst into life.

I Need Your Grace

You will be lucky if you meet with someone who lives their life from the direct experience of Grace. This will be a great blessing for you and also a great challenge. This is because they will remind you, not in words, that you are not living your full potential.

You may not even be aware that you are such a potential garden waiting to burst into life.

Having said that, if you are at least a little aware that, “I need your grace to remind me of my own, then there is something in you that is attracted to that powerful blessing to live your life as a Grace Note.

Then in the words of poem of awakening by W. B. Yeats you will be able to declare:-

I am blessed and can bless – Vacillation IV – W. B. Yeats

The experience of Grace will remind you of who you truly are as one created to become a Garden bursting into life.

Creation, of which you are a part, but never apart from, is in love with the forms it creates from all eternity. You are such a form. You are a unique garden of possibility.

One experience of Grace will have you bursting into life. You will be astonished at the Light of your own being (Hafiz). You will harvest your talent

Then you will KNOW the experiential enoughness of those there words, “I love you.”

Those Three Words

these three words are not enough

The lyric writer says, “These three words are not enough.” This is both true and not true. For those, like me, who have lived the Orphan Archetype, I think those three words from the lips of my father would have been enough – at least in the 1st Half of Life. (Yoga Song – In the Living Years – Mike and the Mechanics).

These three words are enough when you live them from your heart in alignment with the Presence – the Force that is forever enough. This is living from the direct experience of the Grace of Union (Yoga).

It is never something you can earn but it is always available. It is not so available when we spend our time Chasing Cars around our heads and following the drive that they take us on – usually into a deeper sense of the personal sense of self. We become driven by the energy of negativity and fear.

You have to step out of the merry go round of thought into the experience of Silent Fellowship with yourself in alignment with Higher Love (Yoga Song – Higher Love – Steve Winwood). You have to step into eternity to really KNOW that these three words (I Love You) really mean from an existential experience.

However, this is not an intellectual experience. It is KNOWING but not knowledge.

I Don’t Know How I Feel

I don't quite know how I feel

Photo by Juanjo Menta from Pexels

The lyricist says, “I don’t quite know how I feel.” Most of us do not know how to feel. The reason is because most of us spend most of our time chasing cars around our heads. We, for the most part, “Have a madman to contend with living in the Cave of my Skull.” (Yoga Song – World Party – The Waterboys).

In order to KNOW what you feel you need to be in tune with your inner body awareness. Feeling is experienced in the body. The only time many people pay attention to the body is when it indicates it feels uneasy. The uneasy feeling tends to be ignored and is often self-medicated. Over time the signals of the body are ignored leading from unease to disease and if further ignored into chronic illness of some kind.

Most of us would rather spend time analysing our feelings rather than feel our feelings. We deny those aspects of ourselves we are taught are unacceptable. We use our energy systems to protect ourselves against uncomfortable feelings

We all do this. We are encouraged to do this. However, in this way, there will be no garden bursting into life and many times you will say, “I don’t know how I feel.”

In order to KNOW how you feel you learn to stop chasing cars around your head and practice sensing the body which is your guidance system for such KNOWING.

Forget What Your Told

forget what your told from the lyric Chasing cars

Photo by Magda Ehlers from Pexels

Not only must you learn to forget what you are told but in order to follow an inspired Yoga Lifestyle it is essential that you learn the art of self-forgetting. It isn’t enough that you swap on kind of belief system for another which many people do.

Learn how to move into your state of INNER KNOWING. that which is beyond anything you are told about. Most people resist that phase of the journey of life that involves the willingness not to know.

This is the real meaning of the word and the experience of faith. Faith is not a creed you subscribe too that gives you certainty but an experience of unknowing that you willingly enter in order that real KNOWING can happen through you.

In this way you are BEING TOLD THROUGH. You are being told by the Universe. This is an experience that you will not forget.

This requires that you cultivate a committed relationship to the power of silence beyond your obsession with the overthinking personal mind.

Be empty of worrying. Think of who created thought. – Rumi

Before we Get to Old

before we get too old

Photo by Pixabay from from Pexels.com

If you do not learn how to chase cars around your head in a constructive rather than destructive way then you will grow old before your time. You may never be graced a moment of Grace whereby you glimpse the Garden of your potential bursting into life.

You are never too old to begin the journey of tending the Garden of your one wild and precious life. When you do so you bless not only yourself but others. Rainer Maria Rilke says it this way.

Sometimes a man stands up during supper
and walks outdoors, and keeps on walking,
because of a church that stands somewhere in the East.
And his children say blessings on him as if he were dead.

And another man, who remains inside his own house,
stays there, inside the dishes and in the glasses,
so that his children have to go far out into the world

Rainer Maria Rilke

This is the work of following and finding your true destiny.

This is more often than not a 2nd Half of Life focus. (during supper). The 1st Half of Life is all about creating a sense of yourself in the world (the personal self). The 2nd Half of Life is about union of self with the True Self (church that stands somewhere in the East)

The first half of life is devoted to forming a healthy ego, the second half is going inward and letting go of it. ― Carl Jung

Chasing Cars to Find Meaning in Life

chasing cars to the finish

Photo by Burak K from Pexels

So that shares with you a personal reflection on one of my favourite songs entitled Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. Whether or not the lyricist has that understanding I cannot say. What I think is important is what the words say to me or to you.

Music, song, poetry and storytelling are the language of the heart and soul.

They touch you in ways that concepts and intellect do not. If they resonate with you, they invite you into a dimension of longing. If you are lucky this will move into an experience of devotion. You become devoted to the purpose of your life which, with Grace, will allow you to FEEL in alignment with Love’s Purpose.

I hope that this reflection on this heartsong inspires you to value the practice of wasting time. That you commit to learning how to enter the silent fellowship of inner stillness.

Then you can lie down and rest in the practice of Yoga Nidra and simply watch the thoughts that run incessantly around your head. You can forget the world and invite a different world. With commitment they slow and you enter that Garden that is bursting into life.

May it be so for you. May it be so for all.

If you have any comments or questions or heartsongs of you own why not take time to share your reflection.
