Why might you be interested in the heart chakra symbol, and how might such interest contribute to a deeper sense of wholeness and fulfillment?

I tell a story called the King of the Fairies. In the story, there is a riddle. This riddle is, “What is the longest and shortest journey we all take?”

The answer is the journey from the head to the heart. We will all take the journey from the sense of the separate personal self as represented by the voice in your head to the heart where you get to KNOW what it feels like to be whole (healed).

Let me outline this heart chakra symbol reflection as follows

To explore the heart chakra symbol, it helps if you understand how this writer views a chakra. You will find various definitions around the word ‘chakra’ but the way I relate to this word is as a field of potential.

This field of potential is like the colour band in a rainbow. The band of colour is not separate from the rainbow, but it does have its distinct colour. The colour of the heart chakra symbol is represented by the colour green.

The potential within the heart chakra is as the bridge to KNOWING and flowing as the flow of the Divine within you.

This is the meaning of the statement by the Christian mystic Meister Eckhart, who wisely declares.

When the higher flows into the lower the lower is transformed by the higher – Meister Eckhart – Christian mystic.

Meister Eckhart could have been describing the whole of the spiritual journey as represented by the seven major chakra system.

A symbol is more than words. The symbol takes you beyond words.

It can take you much deeper than words. Symbols cross time and culture.

The anthropologist Angeles Arrien writes about the five major symbols that are found across all time and all cultures. These universal symbols are.

  1. The Equidistant Cross.
  2. The Circle.
  3. The Square.
  4. The Triangle.
  5. The Spiral.

These symbols represent the language of the heart which is the language of connection and union. The heart chakra symbol is really a symbol of the unity of the personal and the Divine.

The Heart Chakra Symbol

symbol for heart chakra

Each chakra has a symbol related to it. The symbol for the heart chakra is a six-pointed star or the Star of David.

Do not simply take this as a symbol of the nation state of Israel. If you understand it only on that level, you miss the power of this invitation as I will explain in more detail.

The six-pointed star is a beautiful symbol. It is a symbol of the desire for union. This is a symbol of the language of the heart to know union with the Divine. This is not belief in the Divine but INNER KNOWING of the Divine. This is your experiential KNOWING.

This is also the union of.

  • Time with Eternity.
  • Finite with the Infinite.
  • Personal with the Transpersonal.

The six-pointed star is a symbol of the higher flowing into the lower, which then transforms the lower—the personality.

The symbol of the star represents the fulfilment of your true desire. The root of the word ‘desire’ means of a “star.”

I begin my book Awakening the Heart – 21 Ways to Follow Love’s Message with a reflection on the heart chakra symbol.

I share with you here this opening chapter focused on the symbol for the heart chakra.

Chapter 1

The Shape

Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering – St. Augustine

Each chakra has associated with it a symbolic shape. These shapes are not simply arbitrary shapes but archetypal shapes. An archetype is a recurring pattern of character, symbol, or situation found in the mythology, religion, and stories of all cultures. The shape associated with the heart chakra is that of a six-pointed geometric star. It is the compound of two equilateral triangles.

This six-pointed star is created by the intersection of an equilateral triangle pointing upward and another pointing downward. The upward pointing triangle represents the power of the masculine and the downward pointing triangle the power of the feminine. Within the heart chakra these two forces meet and support each other. Within the second chakra, also known as the sacral chakra, these two forces are found in opposition. This polar opposition is what we normally understand as relationship. Alignment of these two energies within the heart chakra brings peace of heart and mind. It is the opinion of this writer that the masculine dynamic is required to serve the feminine dynamic. This is not because the feminine is better than the masculine but the feminine is more evolved. All human beings start out as being feminine in utero.

You are star potential. You have within you these two forces of Creation. In different traditions they are given different names such as Yin and Yang or Shakti and Shiva. The driving force in the world at present is the masculine will to power. The will to power has brought us to a time of radical change and almost to the brink of ecological disaster. As a species we are close to the edge. This tumultuous period we are living in is a time of transition. It is a time of twixt and in between. The old paradigm that is the will to power cannot solve our present crisis. Only the new paradigm of the will to Love will take us beyond chaos. Only through discipline, commitment and practice by significant numbers of individuals will we provide the energy to tip the balance in favor of a new way of being in the world. This is the willingness of enough individuals to become servants of Love, not as believers, but as people willing to enter the unknown and allow what is as yet unknown to be birthed through them into this world of form. This would manifest new forms of institution and government that are truly for the people by the people. Such individuals are those willing to trust the power of the feminine to have their masculine energy live in service to Love.

In the media there is a presently a great number of programs such as The X Factor, Britain has Talent, American Idol and others. These programs invite individuals to become stars. This is a great invitation but tends to overlook the holy nature of such an invitation. Real celebrity is rooted in the word celebration which relates to that which is celestial. Television programs tend to focus on celebrity as an aspect of the personality rather than on talent given as a gift to express in the world for the highest good of all. The individual who is able to share their talents in this way is truly celebratory. A star produces light. The star symbol of the heart chakra represents the light of the Divine. The true celebrity allows the radiance of their Divine expression to light up their personality. This energy is the true X Factor because it is the felt experience of union. It is the experience of allowing one’s birthing ability (feminine power) to be expressed in form (masculine manifestation).

The word ‘celebrate’ means “to frequent or to honor.” What you begin to frequent is your unique frequency. This frequency is you as a unique expression of Universal Sound. To the degree you honor this unique sound is the degree to which you feel whole-hearted. This frequency comes from the One Life. This is the One Life that is the birthless-deathless vibration out of which all that is manifested into form arises. This frequency manifests itself as elemental particles from which matter is created. The balancing of the heart chakra invites you to be aligned with this primal vibration. The Sanskrit word for the heart chakra is Anahata which means ‘unbeaten.’ Sound is usually made by contact with some form be it a drum or a cymbal.

This unbeaten sound is the primal vibration. It is the sound from which you resonate and are being created in each moment. This makes you a resounding success beyond any idea of success or failure. This is indeed a cause for celebration. You are not here to be judged a winner or loser. This sound creates you as a win-win situation for all because it is the eternal sound of Love that informs all things including you, and most especially you. You are part of this eternal sound but never apart from it. When the heart chakra is balanced you become a willing co-creator with the flow of Creation. Within this flow true celebrity and celebration is found. You find within the star quality and resonance unique to you. Frequent your unique vibration and become at one with the Universal as it expresses through you. This will be your true stardom and your true delight.

Loving the Invitation-The Shape

The promises of this world are, for the most part, vain phantoms; and to confide in one’s self, and become something of worth and value is the best and safest course. ~ Michelangelo

The Bible declares you to be made in the image of God. As God is Love you are, therefore, created from Love’s imagination. This is the invisible and eternal force that creates all forms from the dimension of formless. You have a starring role in Love’s forever becoming. You are that important. You are not even required to prove yourself worthy. Because you are here means you are already worthy enough. Our deepest fear really is that we are not worthy of Love and this is the very barrier that keeps us from living Love’s Message that is our birth right to enjoy.

To open the heart chakra you need to be faithful to the magnificence of Love. The great Islamic mystic and poet Jellaluddin Rumi invites us to risk all for love. It truly is a risk. Nothing is guaranteed except that you cannot fall out of Love’s embrace. The real risk is in our forgetting and not feeling the connection. The heart is an organ of trust. It is designed to feel and connect with the Beloved within you. Your work in following Love’s Message is to trust the universal as it speaks through you. It designed you to share its Message of Love in a unique way. Be willing to get out of the way and say, “Yes!”

Begin each day with a heartfelt intention to trust the highest good within you to be expressed through you. Write this intention in a journal and toward the end of each day reflect on how you have paid attention to such intention. Do not judge yourself. Simply, allow this to be a practice of inviting insight. In this journal don’t simply pay attention to what you think. Pay attention to what you feel. Sometimes you may feel you are taking a couple steps backwards and then a baby step forward. This is the energy associated with the lower chakras being brought into conscious awareness. During such a period pay attention to your breathing and to the images that come to mind. Get still and simply practice trusting the silence of the heart.

Out of this silence arises the heart’s light to guide you in the way of Love. Over time you will feel this starlight within brighten your day as you shine the Love light you are into this world of form. You will feel in ‘great shape.’ The union of the masculine and feminine is represented by the union of two triangles that form a six pointed star. You will become the marriage of the polarity of masculine and feminine within and you attain peace of mind and heart.

You Are A Star in the Making

You are already a star in your own right. You are unique. Your work is to unblock the revelation to this truth.

The six-pointed star is the union of two triangles. There is an upward-pointing triangle and a downward-pointing triangle. To illustrate what the six-pointed star represents, I quote by the Christian mystic Meister Eckhart.

When the higher flows into the lower the lower transforms a higher sorry the lower is transformed by the higher.

The higher represents the energy of the higher three energy centers. The lower represents the energy of the lower three chakras. The higher flows into the lower through the open heart chakra.

Lower Chakra Energy Centres

  1. Root Chakra – Embodiment – I am.
  2. Sacral Chakra – Relationship – I feel.
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra – Personal Power – I can.

The higher represents the energy of the Divine. Lower energy centers represent your personality. The six-pointed star represents the unity of the human and Divine. It really represents self-actualization. It represents you fulfilling your true potential.

Meaning of the Heart Chakra Symbol

You are here to play a starring role in the unending unfoldment of creation. This, in the words of the modern mystic Eckhart Tolle, “Is how important you are.” – The Power of Now.

The coming together of the six-pointed star represents your fulfillment. It represents your alignment with the flow of the universe. You get to become all Creation intends you to be. Your task is to create an opening so that the higher is available to flow into the lower.

This is a challenging task of letting go and letting God. It is the challenging task of trusting in and Companioning Your Greatness. It is that the light of recognizing that you are a co-creator with infinite potential.

And therefore, friend, if your great race were run
And these things came, So much the more thereby
Have you made greatness your companion,
Although it be for children that you sigh:
These are the clouds about the fallen sun,
The majesty that shuts his burning eye.

These are the Clouds – W. B. Yeats

This is the poem I use to facilitate my workshop in Ireland called Companioning YOUR Greatness.

How to Begin Heart Healing

heart chakra awakening

Dreams Of Love Art Print Carol Cavalaris by Carol Cavalaris

Heart chakra healing begins when you start to long for the experience of union with the Source that created you to uniquely express through you.

You become what the poet W. B. Yeats called the Sweet Dancer. You align your energy system with the Lord of the Dance who you allow to dance through you. In this way, the higher flows into the lower – into you as a person.

Even if you only acknowledge it intellectually recognize that there are two worlds. In reality, there is only ever one but appears as two. This appearance of two is necessary for the process of creation. Without this appearance, creation doesn’t happen.

Recognize that you are here to be the star it creates you to become and are in potential. This is not arrogance. This recognizes your birthright.

Your joy and your blessing will be unfolded to the degree you align the higher with the lower. Your task is really to align the lower—the personality—which you then surrender to the will of the divine. You and the Divine flow is one. This alignment is really the task of the 2nd Half of Life.

Life flows. Life goes through you all that it created you to do through you. You become an expression of Love in form.

Heart Chakra Symbolic Practice

heart chakra bag for life

Investing in a REAL Bag for Life

The Chakra Project

It is essential that you establish reminders of what is important to you especially where your heart is concerned.

When I write here about the heart, I’m writing about the heart in relation to the ‘spiritual heart.’ This is the heart that longs for union with its Source. I recommend you acquire a REAL bag for life.

This is one that symbolically represents what your heart longs for.

Imagine this REAL bag for Life to be one you carry around. It’s a kind of magical bag because it contains only objects that connect you to your spiritual heart.

You might decide that each week you take yourself and your bag on an artist’s date. This idea comes from Julia Cameron’ The Artists Way.  I call these dates with the creative self, “Heart-ist’s dates.

In the Heart-ist’s bag you take with you only objects that reflect your connection to the heart. These might include.

  • A favorite spiritual book.
  • A Spiritual Journal.
  • A book of poetry.
  • Craft materials.
  • Artist materials.

In this way, you begin the signal to your heart that you are intent on taking action to unblock those blocks to your creative expression.

In reality, all creative expression is the flow of the Divine expression through you. Taking yourself on an artist’s date is a commitment to unblocking so you become infused with inspiration—in-spirited.

Gift yourself (or someone you love) this heart chakra bag and let it a symbol of your commitment to heart awakening. Make it your commitment to become the star in the making that you truly are and are created to be so that you can remind yourself that you are really a gift to the world.

Heart Chakra Symbol Summary

ReptiliArt – Modern Printable Wall Arts And Digital Posters

Below, I summarize the above reflection on the heart chakra symbol.

  • A chakra is a field of potential.
  • There are three levels to the chakra system.
  • A symbol is the language of the heart.
  • The heart chakra symbol is a six-pointed star.
  • The six-pointed star represents the unity of the personal with the Divine.
  • This unity is your starring role.

The heart opens to the degree you learn to trust the energy at the lower levels.

This is the task invited by Rumi who says,

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it ― Rumi

Another symbol for the heart chakra is the cross.

The vertical axis represents the Divine. The horizontal axis represents the personal.

Where they meet is the union of the personal and the Divine. Where they meet, you become the God-man. The word ‘man’ in this sense is not gender-specific.

What the Difference between a Symbol and Sign

A sign is always clear. It can never be complex, since it will otherwise lose its character as a sign. A sign can also be expressed in words.

When we, [in Europe] for example, see a round sign and a diagonal cross on it as a traffic sign, we know this means “no stopping.” We could just as well write “no stopping.”

On the other hand, a symbol coveys a complex and enigmatic meaning. It can never be expressed completely in words because it has a surplus of meaning. A symbol is inexhaustible because it participates in the visible world, and also in the invisible and unconscious reality. The realm of the unconscious is inexhaustible.

A symbol means to me whatever it awakens within me. This is why a symbol cannot be generalized. In the West, for example, the dragon is usually a negative symbol. However, it is a symbol of good luck in China. Therefore, the symbol means to me whatever it triggers in me.

Transform an ordinary room into a sacred space! It is known from ancient times that light, color and sacred geometry have the power to awaken higher states of consciousness within. These illuminated artistic creations can open the doorway to a profound inner experience.

This Yantra Mandala is a dual painting, the beautiful metallic pink lotus mandala is representing the heart chakra, and the design in the middle, painted in purple sparkle is the Ganesh Yantra. There is a very special place for Lord Ganesha in Hindu mythology. He is worshipped as the lord of prosperity, wisdom and eternal knowledge. He is also believed to be the remover of obstacles from the path of life.

Other Notes

A Yantra is a pattern used in Hinduism for meditation and worship.

It is a geometrical symbol of contemplative meditation of Hindu tradition which is used as a way of connecting oneself with energy of the Divine.

They are a symbolic representation of a deity or cosmic force unbound of their physical form, each having their own unique design.

Shapes and patterns commonly employed in yantra include squares, triangles, circles, and floral patterns but may also include more complex and detailed symbols.

Though often rendered in two dimensions through art, yantra are conceived and conceptualized by practitioners as multi-dimensional sacred architecture.

The Yantra Wisdom Divination Deck offers you a way to shift your perspective through creativity, ritual and reverence. Yantras are ancient geometrical patterns that represent different forms of divinity. The creation, as well as contemplation & meditation on them, has the power to change you, by repeatedly engaging in the question “who am I?” A yantra, like a symbol as defined by Carl Jung, “represents in itself something that is not wholly understandable, and that it hints only intuitively at its possible meaning.” In other words, when something is difficult to speak of or understand, the unconscious creates a representation of it, to better connect with and remember who you truly are.
