The heart chakra is the chakra that opens you to the experience beyond the sense of the limited personal self.

The lower three chakras (root, sacral and solar plexus) are related to the development of the personality within this dimension of time and space.

Many people never move beyond their sense of personal identity to the longing for a deeper experience beyond the personal – the transpersonal.

For this writer it is the opening of the heart that begins the authentic journey of Yoga. The word ‘Yoga’ means to ‘yoke’ that is a metaphor for the direct experience of “union.”

This is the union of the personal with the transpersonal and of time with eternity. Yoga is not simply about learning how to be accomplished at asanas or pranayama.

The authentic practice of yoga is the intention to union.

Here are some Rumi quotes that invite the experience of heart yoga.

Love is the bridge to everything – Rumi.

Come out of the circle of time into the circle of Love – Rumi

It is only through the opening of the heart chakra that you come out of the circle of time which is the equivalent of your never ending overthinking personal mind.

You move out of the head (circle of time) into the heart (Circle of Love).

When the heart chakra is open you allow the flow of the everything to be expressed through you. The Christian mystic Miester Eckhart said it this way.

When the higher flows into the lower the lower is transformed by the higher – Meister Eckhart.

The higher refers to the energy of the transpersonal represented by the higher three chakras related to communion with Divine Intention.

The lower relates to the identification with the personal self (lower three chakras). The transformation happens through the open-heart chakra.

If nothing else a heart chakra song is a song you love that lift’s you higher. I am going to share with you a song I love which has long been a favourite heart song.

I will first share with you those aspect of the lyrics which specifically invite remembrance of the longing of the heart for union with Divine Intention.

The name of the song is Listen to the Lion by the Irish singer songwriter Van Morrison from the album St. Dominic’s Preview.

These are some of the key parts of the lyrics that make this a heart chakra song for me.

• Listen to the Lion.
• All my Love.
• I shall Search my soul.
• All my tears have flown.
• And We Sailed
• A Brand-New Start.

Please note that this is my interpretation of the lyrics of this song. So, let’s look at each of these lyrical aspects in turn.

A lion who breaks the enemy’s ranks is a minor hero compared to the lion who overcomes himself. –  Rumi

The title of this heart chakra song is Listen to the Lion. Think of the character of Aslan the Lion in the story and movie The Chronicles of Narnia.

The Lion represents what various spiritual traditions refer to as The Christ, Your Buddha Nature or The Beloved (Sufi).

The Lion represents courage. The word courage comes from the root of the French word ‘cour’ meaning “to enter the heart.”

This is the most courageous intention with which you can align. The mystic poet and Islamic teacher Jellaladin Rumi says,

Follow the heart it will not lead you astray – Rumi (1207 – 1273)

It takes courage to listen and follow the promptings of Love’s Message as it is designed to come through you by way of an open-heart willing to allow the flow of the higher.

The title of the song begins with the word “Listen.” This means that you are required to listen to the promptings of your heart and the Still Small Voice within.

Listening to the heart means you must take the 1^st step on the spiritual journey which is learning to be aware of the never-ending voice in your head.

This is why I love this song. It reminds me of the core practice of any spiritual journey.

This is the practice of listening and allowing the voice of the Lion within you to speak and guide you in Companioning Your Greatness (These are the Clouds – W. B. Yeats)

When you live your life with a listening attitude for the guidance from the Lion within you then most of your tears will have flown.

What to shed tears over when you begin to unfold what is eternal within you? What to shed tears for when you embody the sound of Love you are created to express for the highest good of all?

Tears may come but they will be for the suffering of those still lost in the sense of the personal sense of the separate self and their ever over thinking mind.

It is the obsession with the overthinking mind that leads to most of the tears that are shed in this world of time and space.

The whole effort of spiritual sciences has always been how to transcend the mind, how to look at life beyond the limitations of the mind. – Sadhguru

The essential purpose of Yoga is as the father of Yoga Patanjali stated the modifications of the mind. This is the modification of moving beyond identification with the personal mind.

Then you will live a life of the lion and most all your tears will have flown.

The real “brand NEW Start” is when you begin to trust the forever new that is designed to come through you.

What arises from the overthinking personal mind is never truly new. It tends to be a rehash of what is already known, and which is mostly added to you by way of outside information.

Most of who you think you are a combination of other people’s opinions that you have adopted as part of your personality package.

A brand-NEW START is where you turn within, trust the silence and stillness, and allow the KNOWING of who you are to be your direction HOME.

In this way you take a truly brand new start by walking the way of Love.

You get out of the way and allow yourself to be thought through. This being thought through is forever NEW.  You are a flow of Love in action. You become a happening.

You free yourself of Karma and avoid creating more.

You may meditate on whatever you like, but I shall meditate on the heart of a lion. That gives strength — Swami Vivekananda

This Listen to the Lion song is what I identify as a heart chakra song. This is a song that invites the remembrance of you as being part of much more than you can ever think about.

We all need reminders of the magnificence that Divine Intention created us to be.

Put on the music and dance now. Your unrestricted, luscious, rich joy serves not only you but the planet. So move those lower chakras, open your heart, and let your life force express itself like the most succulent, juicy fruit, the most redolent and colorful flower, or the loudest and most raucous song. After that, make a commitment to getting rid of all the old emotional toxins that have become stuck inside you so you can live freely and agelessly.”

Let this song be such a reminder. Better than this let this song be an invitation to tune into and listen to the Still Small Voice within.

In this way you become lion hearted.

You become King or Queen of your sovereign state of Presence. The overthinking personal mind is recognised as the servant, and you return to that inner state that the Chinese Sage Chaung Tzu Palace of Nowhere that is Everywhere.
