Traditionally the heart chakra animal is the antelope. The antelope is a symbol of air connected to the Earth. Each chakra animal symbolizes the characteristics and attributes of the chakra they represent.
The antelope therefore symbolises the connection between the above and the below. No matter how high we climb in a spiritual sense it is important to remain grounded and connected to the body. (Root Chakra – 1st Chakra – Red Chakra).
There are archetypal animals associated with each chakra and also personal chakra animals associated with each chakra.
My personal chakra animal associated with the heart chakra is the eagle. The eagle is associated with intelligence, renewal and courage.
In Philip Carr-Gomm’s The Druid Animal Oracle: Working with the Sacred Animals of the Druidic Tradition, we are told
The eagle, when accepted, will also show you the way to renew and rejuvenate yourself by demonstrating the art of plunging – at just the right moment- into the lake of the heart. The symbol of the eagle and the lake invites us to remember to periodically allow our intellect, our rational mind, the opportunity to plunge into the deep water of our emotional life and subconscious. This is the work of aligning the sacral chakra. (Sacral chakra) In this way knowledge is transformed into wisdom, which is the intelligence of the heart.
These personal chakra animals can appear in your dreams. Sometimes this is in a symbolic way.
For example, in one of my dreams I encounter the eagle by meeting a member of The Eagles rock group.
I meet with one of The Eagles and he plays guitar while sitting at a small circular table, which is a representation of the sun. The feeling of being with this member of the Eagles is one of excitement.
If we pay attention to the personal chakra animals over time you will begin to notice them appear in your everyday life as well as in your dreams.
These intimations give guidance beyond the limitation of intellect.
New Kind of Intelligence
You will begin to access a new kind of intelligence that is manifested within your personal chakra animal. This is the intelligence of symbol.
The intelligence of the eagle is not the intelligence of the head but one that is far seeing. This is seeing through the heart in one who has had the courage to integrate the lower chakras.
The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who has written about the chakra system said,
If every individual had a better relationship to the animals within him, he would set a higher value on life. – Carl Gustav Jung
When you commit to paying attention to the way that animals appear in your life simply let the animal come.
Approach this invitation to connection with your animal guides with relaxed alertness. Try and avoid wishful thinking.
Each animal will come voluntarily when the time is right.
Do not worry if you do not understand why one animal has appeared in preference to another. Neither is it necessary to over intellectualise about the animal’s nature.
Simply try and feel into what the animal is communicating to you. It helps if you keep a personal journal recording this inner work.
Writing in Animal Wisdom: The Definitive Guide to the Myth, Folklore and Medicine Power of Animals, Jessica Dawn Palmer writes:
Eagle medicine allows one to soar above the earth to gain perspective and clarity. It assists in transcending the mundane and perceiving the deepest truth at the heart of a given situation. Eagle enhances spiritual and creative vision. It facilitates communication with the divine for creative inspiration. The eagle comes when it is time for a person to connect with the higher self and divine guidance.
Heart Chakra Animal Invitation
The heart loves to go soaring but it is essential to keep your feet on the ground.
You were born with potential.
You were born with goodness and trust.
You were born with ideals and dreams.
You were born with greatness.
You were born with wings.
You are not meant for crawling, so don’t.
You have wings.
Learn to use them and fly.
We are both human and Divine. There are those who try to transcend the earth and the water elements connected to the way of chakra healing as well as in their everyday lives.
They try to go soaring with spiritual practices like chanting and meditation, but unlike the eagle they are either unable to plunge into the depths of their feeling life and the feeling life of the body.
They become ‘airy-fairy’ and live a kind of ethereal existence. (not to show any disrespect to the earth elemental fairies).
The eagle and the mythological celestial bird called the Phoenix symbolise the transmuting of feelings into the peace of the heart.
This is a transformational process that results in a way of seeing the world beyond polar opposites.
We attain to a position like the eagle where we are above everything – above the limitation of the body, the emotions and the personal will to power.
Where previously love tore us apart inside all has now become unified and we are at peace. We are authenticity itself and are deeply connected to True Self.
When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds – From The Peace of Wild Things – Wendell Berry.
Messengers of Love
Animals become messengers of Love if you are willing to allow them to become so.
Like many of the ways to open the heart chakra you have to set your intention and then pay attention to what manifests in your day to day life.
When you see any one creature on a regular basis this may be an indication that you have a life pattern that you are being asked to attend to.
Rather than immediately research the symbolic meaning connected to this animal pay more attention to what this animal connects you to in your personal life.
Because we glorify the intellect as your prime source of intelligence this kind of understanding is often thought of as primitive and superstitious.
It is in fact an invitation to super consciousness. It is an invitation to live from the intelligence of the symbolic rather than the rational.
It is the invitation to connect to the symbolism that gives meaning to any encounter in your day to day life.
The Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist Carl Jung reminds us that in the symbol you have a potential encounter with the True Self.
The Power of Symbol
Opening your mind and heart to the way in which symbols appear in your life allows you to see animals in a very different way.
You begin to connect to them in ways that are respectful and loving.
You become more guardian like rather than see them as creatures to be exploited.
How you treat an animal reflects how you treat that symbolic aspect of yourself.
Willingness to allow animals to speak Love’s message is an exercise in intuition rather than analysis.
It is an exercise in trusting the way in which the soul invites awareness of your higher purpose.
Like all the invitations in this book it is best if you approach such an invitation in a relaxed and attentive manner.
Do not go grasping at signs but allow them to come to you. Your work is simply to keep the heart open so that the singing bird might come to sing its universal song though you.
Birdsong brings relief
to my longing
I’m just as ecstatic as they are,
but with nothing to say!
Please universal soul, practice
some song or something through me!
The key is to be interested and excited but not pushy or grasping.
Most of all have fun and be thankful when the invitation comes through a connection to an animal whatever kind that animal might be.
