What Heart Chakra Balance Requires

Recognize that the opening of the heart chakra needs to be done together with the work of healing, balancing and aligning the lower three chakras. These are the chakras related to personal development. Otherwise you are in all likelihood engaged in spiritual bypassing.

Recognise also, that the practice of heart chakra opening, is not a one day event. It is a journey of a lifetime and beyond time itself. You are created to KNOW yourself as a bridge between the human and the Divine.

This KNOWING comes through the heart. It is a revelation. It is transformational. The challenge is to be committed, patient and disciplined. Without these three you will simply spend your life on what is referred to as The Vogage and Return. This is living your life and experiencing suffering without meaning.

A Bit of Mystery and Intrigue

I have attempted to add a little bit of intrigue into this article. I hope this adds a bit of fun to the experience.

Instead of listing the title of the songs I have listed the quality that I think the song invites. In this way, I think and I hope, you will get more value out of this article because you are likely to be drawn to those songs that have the heart quality that most attracts you.

I have added a menu of the 5 inspirational songs to balance the heart chakra so that you can quickly access those you think will most appeal. Each of the heartsongs has its own section. Each section will have a YouTube video  and will have the lyrics below the video.

These sections include a personal refection on why the song relates to opening and balancing the heart chakra.

5 Songs for Opening the Heart Chakra

You will have your own songs which I hope your might consider drawing together into a group that allows you to practice uplifting your heart. You might consider then adding them to as a group in www.listenonrepeat.com

  1. Song of Longing – Returning to Your True Self.
  2. Song of Courage – Listening to Your Inner Knowing.
  3. Song of Remembrance – From Darkness to Light.
  4. Song of Fellowship – The Power of Silence.
  5. Song of Celebration – Love is Your Whole Being.

Included in each of the sections related to the song I have added what I consider to be the key phrase of lyric from the song. This phrase or lyric is what draws me to listen to the song with the intention of opening and balancing the heart chakra.

So let me begin this journey into the power of heartsong to invite you into a place of alignment and balance.

1 – Song of Longing

One of the key energies of the heart chakra is the energy of longing. This is the longing of the human heart for union with Divine Presence. This is the KNOWING of Love that has Loved you all your life and KNOWS you by heart. (Love after Love)

I suspect for many who know this song  that they regard it as a sentimental song about someone who longs to return home to their significant other. However, there are keys in the lyrics that suggest that this is a love that goes deeper.

The lyrics include references to the relationship to thought, silence and love.

These are intimations for practicing true homecoming that is the union of the personal with the Universal. You practice allowing your thoughts to escape. In various wisdom traditions this is referred to as witness consciousness.

You begin to fall into the silence where love awaits you and is forever awaiting you.

Paradoxically, this is the song that drew me leave my homeland of Northern Ireland during that period of time called The Troubles. This was when a tribal war (root Chakra dynamic) was in full throttle between Catholics and Protestants.

I was introduced to this song by a young woman poet from England. We had become pen pals. It was my hope that we might become more than this but it wasn’t to be.

I now play this song to remind me of my true longing to come home. This is the place of unity where I KNOW that silent power of Love that forever waits expression for the highest good of all. This is the KNOWING of the Love that lies within the deep silence of the heart.

Key Phrase or Lyric

Where my love lives waiting silently for me.

Homeward Bound
Simon & Garfunkel

I’m sitting in the railway station
Got a ticket to my destination
On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home where my thought’s escaping
Home where my music’s playing
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

Every day’s an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines
And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories
And every stranger’s face I see reminds me that I long to be

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home where my thought’s escaping
Home where my music’s playing
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

2 – Song of Courage

This is one of my all-time favourite songs.

The opening line declares the experience of an open-heart chakra. This is what happens when you have done the work of removing the blocks that are prominent in the lower three chakras that relate to the dimension of personality.

These are:-

  1. The Root Chakra – Embodiment.
  2. The Sacral Chakra – Relationship.
  3. The Solar Plexus Chakra -Personal Empowerment.

This healing of blocks around the lower three chakras is the key focus here at Yoga Journey for Life. When these blocks are released then the heart chakra begins to open and allow the energy of the higher chakras  to flow into the lower chakras.

When the higher flows into the lower the lower is transformed by the higher. – Meister Eckhart -German Mystic (1260 – 1328)

Here you have a real invitation to embodied spirituality rather than the invitation to transcendental accent. You are not created by the Divine in order to avoid embodiment. You are here to realize the Divine within embodiment.

In this song you are invited to listen to the wisdom voice inside you. This is representative of the Christ Mind within you. Do not simply associate the Christ Mind with the teachings of Jesus Christ. It has always been and ever will be.

This inner voice will take you sailing into a different kind of world if you are looking for a brand-new start. You learn to put aside the never-ending dialogue that is the voice in your head.

You put away your overthinking personal mind in order to allow yourself to be thought through. This song becomes a chant inviting you into a place of enchantment that is referred to by different names.

When you listen to this inner voice, represented by the metaphor of a Lion, you will find that all your tears have flown. You will have the courage of the Lion to live from the open heart. Courage is taken from the root of the French word “Cuer” meaning “To enter the Heart.”

Courage is a heart word. The root of the word courage is cor – the Latin word for heart. In one of its earliest forms, the word courage meant “To speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart. – Brené Brown, I Thought It Was Just Me: Women Reclaiming Power and Courage in a Culture of Shame

Let this song invite you into the experience of encouragement to become whole-hearted.

3 – Song of Rememberance

This is a song I sing by way of remembering a wish. This is the wish of the mystical poet Hafiz when he declares:-

I wish that when you are lonely and in darkness that I could show you the magnificence of the light of your own being – Hafiz of Shiraz.

To KNOW this Light of your own being is a great Grace. This KNOWING is not intellectual information. It is insight. It comes through a heart open to the magnificence of who you are and who you are created to BE.

In A Tree House – Hafiz of Shiraz

Light
Will someday split you open
Even if your life is now a cage,

For a divine seed, the crown of destiny,
Is hidden and sown on an ancient fertile plain
You hold the title to.

Love will surely bust you wide open
Into an unfettered, blooming new galaxy

Even if your mind is now
A spoiled mule.

A life giving radiance will come,
The Friend’s gratuity will come –

O look again within yourself,
For I know you were once the elegant host
To all the marvels in creation.

From a sacred crevice in your body
A bow rises each night
And shoots your soul into God.

Behold the Beautiful Drunk Singing One
From the lunar vantage point of love.

He is conducting the affairs
Of the whole universe

While throwing wild parties
In a tree house – on a limb
In your heart.

This experience of heart awakening does not last. For most, however, the perfume of this experience lasts. You know that down in the darkness of the feeling of loneliness and separation that there is the deeper reality of Oneness.

You have been given to KNOW that the Love you seek is really the LOVE that you ARE. This changes your relationship to the way in which you view LOVE and your relationship to LOVE.

There is, however, the need for each of us to consciously enter the darkness deep in order to alchemist this darkness into Light. This is the work of heart chakra balance and alignment.

Most people I know who spiritual seekers are, especially at the beginning of Yoga Journey for Life, focused on accent. Their energy goes on opening the Higher Charkas. They are headed for the Light. They would rather avoid the very necessary work of integrating the darkness of feelings they disown.

You must go into the dark in order to bring forth your light. ― Debbie Ford, The Dark Side of the Light Chasers: Reclaiming Your Power, Creativity, Brilliance and Dreams

In this way they go flying too close to the Sun (Awakening) and like the Hero in the Greek Mythological story of Icarus they fall to earth because they have not down the groundwork of personal integration that is the work off the lower three chakras

On the spiritual journey there will be times when you find yourself feeling doubtful and even despairing. It helps to have something to remind you of the REALITY of who you are and always are.

This song reminds you of the Light (Delight). This Light is your true nature. The heart KNOWS this but most of the time we forget. We live in the shades of the prison house that is the sense of the separate personal self.

Key Lyric

You were born with eyes wide open so alive wild hope now.

Silver Lining
David Gray

Take this silver lining
Keep it in your own sweet head
And shine it when the night is burning red
Shine it in the twilight
Shine it on the cold, cold ground
Shine it till these walls come
Tumbling down

We were born with our eyes wide open
So alive with wild hope now
Can you tell me why
Time after time
They drag you down
Down in the darkness deep
Fools in their madness all around
Know that the light don’t sleep

Step into the silence
Take it in your own two hands
And scatter it like diamonds
All across these lands, yeah yeah yeah
Blaze it in the morning
Wear it like an iron skin
Only things worth living for
Innocence and magic, amen

We were born with our eyes wide open
So alive with wild hope now
Can you tell me why
Time after time
They drag you down
Down in the darkness deep
Fools in their madness all around
Know that the light don’t sleep

4 – Song of Fellowship

This is a song I often play early in the morning on listenonrepeat.com following having practiced Yoga Nidra. This song is a very recent discovery. I love it. It is a chant that I very often find myself singing when I am working at creating what I call A Garden of Grace.

One of the keyways in which you balance the energy of the heart Chakra is through your relationship with silence. In silent fellowship with your Self you Listen to the Lion. For me silence is prayer.

It is not dictating to the Cosmos. In the words of the spiritual teacher Caroline Myss it is not demanding, “Where’s my stuff?” It is not the practice of the Law of Attraction called The Secret. It is more that you invite

The Secret of Secrets is inside me again – Anna Akhmatova

Silent fellowship begins with the fellowship of the self with the Self. This is the true understanding of the practice of Yoga. It is the direct experience of union of the personal (you) with the Universal. It is the union of time with the Timeless.

It is from this direct experience of KNOWING the True Self that you can in all sincerity offer true fellowship to others. This is not fellowship in order to convert them to your group dynamic. It is the joy of fellowship from the paradoxical power of the silence of NO-THING-NESS.

Out of the NO-THINGNESS everything is on offer but it is freely on offer. All you want to do is pour yourself away in service to the fullness of what is coming through the heart. This transforms the lower – the personality. Higher and lower are not moralistic judgements. They are simply part of the same dance.

Beginning Silence
by Gunilla Norris

Within each of us there is a silence
—a silence as vast as a universe.
We are afraid of it…and we long for it.

(Excerpt from Inviting Silence.

This fellowship has to begin with integrating those aspects of yourself that are Legion. These are the aspects of the personal self that you do not love and have orphaned and disowned. You open your heart to yourself.

This song is what I call Kirtan. It is devotional singing. It is chant. This is part of the Path of Yoga that is called Bhakti. It is the path of Devotion.

Key Phrase

In Silent Fellowship we sit.

Silent Fellowship

In silent fellowship
In silence we sit
In the morning gold

Here is a very short book on the journey into silence and beyond which is a REALLY essential part of heart chakra opening and balance. I cannot praise this book enough. I open it. I read one or two lines from whatever page I open too.  It is enough. My heart swells. I am blessed.

Remove your shoes, for this is holy ground. I was almost breathless with wonder at the beauty of Gunilla Norris’s words – so simple and yet so profound, striking home gently because they are so true, so authentic.

5 – Song of Celebration

So we come to the end of our journey of songs that invite the opening of the heart chakra including tips that lead you in that direction. I end with what I feel to be a song of celebration. I cannot listen to this song without feeling uplifted.

When the heart is open there will be one key experience that you will connect with. This is the dynamic of giving. This is not giving to get. This is giving from the paradoxical emptiness that you KNOW is forever full. You as simply open space for the expression of Creation.

You are not someone who is in the marketplace for Love where there is the dynamic of co-dependence. You are in the placeless place of interdependence and independence.

When the heart is open you give because it is who you are. Love is you whole Being. You are an outpouring of silent fellowship. Love becomes Love for no reason. You may or may not have yet been graced the KNOWING of who you are.

When Love is your whole Being as advised in this song giver and giving are not separate. You can do no other. Otherwise your giving is really simply transactional. This works in the everyday world and is necessary but don’t call it giving from the heart.

The Sun Never Says
Hafiz of Shiraz

Even after all this time
The Sun never says
To the Earth,
“You owe me.”

Look what happens
With a love like that,
It lights the whole Sky.

This is giving from the magnificence of the Light of your own Being. This lights up the whole sky. It lights you up from inside.

Key Lyric

Love is my whole Being

Give a Little Love
Noah and the Whale

Well I know my death will not come
Til I breathe all the air out my lungs
Til my final tune is sung
That all is fleeting
Yeah, but all is good

And my love is my whole being
And I’ve shared what I could
But if you give a little love, you can get a little love of your own
Don’t break his heart
Yeah if you give a little love, you can get a little love of your own
Don’t break his heart

Well my heart is bigger than the earth
And though life is what gave it love first
Life is not all that it’s worth
‘Cause life is fleeting
Yeah, but I love you
And my love surrounds you like an ether
In everything that you do

But if you give a little love, you can get a little love of your own
Don’t break his heart
Yeah if you give a little love, you can get a little love of your own
Don’t break his heart
Yeah if you give a little love, you can get a little love of your own
Don’t break his heart
Yeah if you give a little love, you can get a little love of your own
Don’t break his heart

Well if you are (what you love)
And you do (what you love)
I will always be the sun and moon to you
And if you share (with your heart)
Yeah, you give (with your heart)
What you share with the world is what it keeps of you
